Trawa pampasowa tworzy gęste kępy wąskich, łukowato wygiętych liści o ostrych brzegach. W zależności od odmiany osiąga wysokość 1,5-3,5 m. Późnym latem z rozłożystej rozety równowąskich, lekko niebieskawych liści wyrastają okazałe srebrzysto-białe lub bladoróżowe kwiatostany-wiechy, potocznie nazywane lisimi ogonami, które po zasuszeniu długo zachowują wartość ozdobną. Sama wiecha może mieć długość nawet do 1 m, a cały pęd ponad 3 m. Trawa pampasowa jest rośliną dwupienną, co oznacza że są okazy męskie i żeńskie. Kwiaty żeńskie są puszyste i długie, a przez to bardziej dekoracyjne niż męskie, które wyglądają trochę jakby były mokre i posklejane. Trawa pampasowa jest najokazalszą i najbardziej dekoracyjną wśród wszystkich traw ozdobnych. Rośliny kwitną od września do października, tym obficiej im są starsze. W ogrodach trawa pampasowa winna być sadzona w miejscach dobrze widocznych np. w środkowej części trawnika, pojedynczo lub w grupach, jako efektowny akcent na tle drzew i krzewów lub jako tło dla rabat kwiatowych.
